Metal roofing is a durable, long-lasting, beautiful option if traditional roofing isn’t your preferred style.

Rolled steel, coated in tin, first made its appearance as a roofing material back in the seventeenth century in the Czech Republic. Lead and copper roofing originated in Rome and was used throughout the Middle Ages. Back then, metal roofing was heated and hammered by hand which as you can imagine was more costly. In the 1600’s, a new technique of rolling heated metal was created in Germany which made metal roofing more affordable. Steel rolling mills were patented in Europe in 1728 and by the 1800s, metal roofing was making its way to America. Tin roofs gained rapid popularity in the US from 1860-1920. While first gaining popularity among commercial and retail buildings as well as affluent homeowners, metal roofing quickly became popular among homeowners once newer, more cost-effective techniques were introduced.

While metal roofing was initially a luxury reserved for wealthy homeowners due to the cost and labor-intensive installation, corrugated metal roofing changed that for good. By the 1900’s, corrugated metal roofing became a standard building material not only for commercial and retail buildings but also for homeowners. Throughout the years, metal roofing materials, techniques, and pricing have changed and shifted dramatically. Two techniques that have withstood the test of time are standing seam and classic or corrugated metal roofing. Standing seam metal roof systems consist of wide, flat metal sheets that lock together and conceal the fasteners. Classic or corrugated metal roof systems are more cost-effective and have remained popular among commercial, barn, and residential applications.

One of the largest benefits of metal roofing is its durability. The longest-lived copper roof was installed in 1230 and remained until the cathedral was destroyed in 1945. Because of the longevity of metal roofing, it is also more environmentally friendly than traditional roofing methods. Furthermore, metal roofing can be recycled and typically is recycled to make new metal roofing supplies.

Metal roofing can last longer, be more cost-effective, and help reduce your energy bills more than traditional roofing. Our team is excited to bring metal roofing options to your home.
